Women’s Health

Reflecting on Women's Health Month...

Motherhood is beautiful. But somedays the weekly grocery haul feels like a vacation because I’ve got a whole hour to myself. And while I wouldn’t trade a single moment for the world, even on the most trying of days, I would be lying if I said I didn’t sometimes burn out. How can it be so natural and easy to take care of all those around me, but go into dummy mode when it comes time to take care of myself?

Making time for yourself and your health is vital to feeling like your best, which in return, is vital to being the mother and partner you want to be. We need to make ourselves a priority and make time to take care of ourselves. Whether it be shopping, going to a movie, or meeting with friends for dinner, whatever your cup of tea is, indulge and take a big sip. You deserve it.

I often hear women discussing different care treatment plans for anxiety and depression that they hoped would help but instead gave them side effects that were impacting their relationships and physical well-being. Low libido, low appetite, and zero motivation are the most common symptoms they confided in me.

Cannabis is an alternative way to manage symptoms that is sadly overlooked and undermined because of the stigmas in the world of motherhood. The more moms we have learning and educating other moms, the more normal this natural alternative is going to become. I used to feel silenced, especially by groups of other mothers, by judgement. Meanwhile copious alcohol consumption, and the hang- overs that go with it, is socially acceptable because alcohol is legal.

So, I started speaking out. I started sharing why and how I use medical marijuana and people started listening. Establishing better daily habits creates a healthier mindset and I use cannabis to help me with the two issues I struggle with most.

Eating enough food and getting the right nutrition is essential to how we feel. I naturally have a low appetite and when I am not intaking enough food, I become lethargic, which tanks my motivation. I use cannabis to increase my appetite. It helps me achieve that hungry feeling and allows me to recognize my cravings. I now know what I like and enjoy what I eat instead of just grabbing something quickly for convenience. The better food I eat, the better I feel, the more I want to do. With three very active kids, I need to be energized and my best self to keep up with them.

Another key to my well-being is sleep. A good night’s sleep can dictate our overall health. Balancing my job, family, animals, and home sometimes makes it hard to shut off my thoughts at night. I felt like my mind was racing trying to remember if I put the uniform in the dryer, and did my youngest brush her teeth? Did I send my boss those numbers he requested yesterday? And reassuring myself we will be able to make it from tumbling to soccer in the 15-minute time frame we will have the next day. It never stops. Sleep is too precious to lie in bed for three hours before I could shut my mind down. Medicating with cannabis before bed allows my mind to calm and gives my body a sense of peace. I now look forward to lying in bed and feeling relaxed mentally and physically before drifting to sleep. My legs aren’t restless, and I am not tossing and turning the whole night. The adequacy of sleep has completely changed how I wake up in the morning and my sustainability throughout my next day. Sometimes it’s the little things that need to be changed and once they are you realize how big of an impact they have. Start with the small and simple to achieve the bigger picture.

There are many ways to medicate with cannabis. Most commonly used are flower, edibles, concentrates, lotions, and tinctures. Most recently available at all Swade locations is something very new to the cannabis market. During Women’s Health Month SWADE successfully launched the first ever, Cannabis Suppositories with THC by Amend. This product acts much like a tincture in that it is absorbed by the mucosal membranes in the body. The THC is not processed through the liver resulting in zero intoxicating effects. Patients will start to feel relief within 30 minutes to an hour after insertion. SWADE dispensaries work diligently to cater to the needs of women of all kinds. Connecting with Cannabis

“Never stop learning about the one you love, this life is a long journey and you choose to spend it with your person. Your love changes over the course of your journey. When you explore, you learn and you grow. When you do this together, your love grows with you.”

It’s February! The month of love. After all the homework and racing around like superheroes to get everything done, we don’t leave much time for romance and intimacy with our partners, do we?

No matter how much we prioritize, sometimes, it just doesn’t work out. The best thing I have learned is that date nights do not have to be extravagant or even planned out. The secret to a great date is to do something different than normal. Gain a new perspective. Learn new things about each other with renewed creativity. Create intimacy and connection – get flirty.

Connecting over cannabis can enhance your time together whether your romance is new or you’re in a long term relationship. When influenced by cannabis, your  conversations can become stronger and more rooted in the present.  This will allow you to explore what you already know and discover some new depths with each other. Your love changes over the course of your journey. When you explore, you learn and you grow. When you do this together, your love grows with you.

Whether you are a first timer, someone who hasn’t partaken in a while, or an everyday smoker, there are many great ways to connect with cannabis. Below I am going to explain different products I would recommend for a variety of people to enhance their date night and further bond with their partner.

For my first timers:

There’s no need to be nervous if you have not tried cannabis before! Zoet Cannabis Gummies and the Amend 1:10 Tincture are two great options to start. These products are easy to administer in low doses so you’re less likely to encounter averse effects. Both of these products are low in THC and combined with CBD, creating a beautiful balance to soothe the body and enliven the mind.

Zoet’s mood-boosting gummies have a delicious berry taste that leave you with a clear mind and relaxed body. Wait at least two hours between servings as edible cannabis may take 30 minutes up to two hours to take effect.

The Amend 1:10 tincture has a much quicker onset time of about 20 minutes because it is placed under the tongue.  You will start to feel calming effects and a relaxed body – perfect for cuddling and connection.

For my peeps returning to cannabis after being out of the game:

Feeling rusty? A lot has changed over the last few years in the cannabis industry and there are so many new products and strains! Don’t feel overwhelmed, I got you.

Try a vape pen or a pre-roll pack. There are many great vape products out there, like the Pineapple Upside Down Wedding Cake Disposable Vape by Sinse Cannabis. What I love most about this pen is that you don’t have worry about charging it or pushing buttons, and you can throw it away when you are finished. The ease and convenience of this product makes it hassle free and easy.

Our pre-roll packs are perfect for someone who wants to try different strains and explore what works best for them. The packs come in different quantities and offer a vast selection of strains.  The Lemon Heads pre-roll delivers an amazing taste with invigorating mental stimulation. It promotes creativity and is great to use for a variety of different activities from going to see a movie to going on an afternoon hike.

If variety is the spice of life – cannabis provides endless avenues for you and your lover to explore.

For the daily doser:

You’ve been around the block, so I’ll just cut to the chase. If you haven’t already tried the Caramel Apple Gelato Popcorn Buds, you are missing out. I absolutely love the kick of energy this strain gives me. Whether its day or night, it gives me the right boost I need to be present and engage whole heartedly in whatever I am doing.

Remember how I said a date doesn’t have to be glamorous to be a great time? Isnt’ there is something about being pulled into your partner after a hectic day and feeling cherished and understood that feeds your soul?

Cannabis can help us stay in touch with these feelings. Remember the important things are often those we can’t put a price on like time, effort, and  love. Discover how cannabis can help you reconnect and stay connected to the most important things in life.

Your intimacy is only as strong as your effort. Life is short so be open-minded. Date your lover. Never stop listening and learning, and don’t settle for less than your love deserves.

3 Ways Cannabis Can Support Your Fitness Regimen

With the new year here, ‘tis the season for resolutions and craving real change. If you are thinking about getting back in shape, or just simply want a new way to spice up your current fitness regimen, I hope this article brings you a new and fresh perspective on how to better balance all areas of your health to find your best self. – Kasey

1. Appetite

I think the biggest struggle for most moms everywhere is the time to just simply eat. We are always “snacking” quickly on whatever is in reach because we usually have a whiny, small army waiting for theirs, and, we all know they are not patient. When we do get the luxury of attempting to eat a meal, it is usually cold by the time we are able to sit down and eat it. Food becomes more of a survival need and we easily forget what our favorite dish is or what we used to crave. Food is a major component to happiness and balance. After all, it is the fuel that keeps our bodies going, and, without enough of it, we simply fail. While we can’t change how busy we are and all the things we juggle, we can change our outlook on food and create a better, healthier relationship with it. Cannabis increases your appetite. When dosed at the right times, your body can relax enough to recognize your hunger and encourage your body to communicate the things it is lacking and needing more of. It can also make that plate of food that has gotten cold while waiting for you to cut up 3 other human’s plates taste just a little more appealing. When we are adding more activity to our schedules, we are using more of our body’s energy and in return burning more calories. The biggest misunderstanding is that if we eat less, we weigh less and wont acquire as much fat. This couldn’t be more false. If we eat good food, frequently throughout our day, ideally every 3 hours, we train our bodies to use our stored body fat as a source of energy. Our bodies will burn our fat, instead of our muscle tissue.

There is so much false information out there mainly targeted to busy moms who don’t have a lot of extra time to learn or read more about what they are wanting to change. The media shoves the newest fad diets and binge exercising down our throats to shed those extra pounds we are carrying. There is no quick fix to most things in life, so why would we think the shape and presentation of our bodies is any different? There is no quick fix, your health and fitness should be based off consistency and balance. You shouldn’t be doing more of one than the other because everything is as important, which is why it creates overall balance in your health. Using cannabis to increase your appetite will help you feel stronger throughout your day, giving you more energy to push through, and also support you during your workouts without getting burnt out too fast or crash after. Food is our biggest medicine. What we put into our body is what our cells are reproducing off of. Always remember, you are what you eat.

“Cannabis is a very popular recreational drug that has a variety of medicinal uses, including increasing your appetite to reducing nausea and anxiety. The increase in appetite is probably one of the most common effects. The cannabinoid compound tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) binds to and activates cannabinoid receptor type 1 (CB1), which causes an increase in eating pleasure, food palatability, and ghrelin regulation (the hormone that controls digestion).” -Samantha Thompson

2. Mind Muscle Connection

One of the biggest misunderstandings is that weed makes you lazy. I am a firm believer that cannabis enhances your moods and the way to determine or control that is through the different strains and types. No strain can please everyone alone. Everyone is different and therefore will require a strain that agrees with them. If you are naturally a couch potato and your favorite thing to do is to cuddle up and watch movies, it wouldn’t be recommended that you consume an Indica before working out. There are many athletes out there using cannabis as a part of their regimen. I have been an athlete my whole life. Soccer was my sport of choice up until college, after that, weightlifting. My love for the gym grew year by year and I started training for bodybuilding competitions. I competed in 4 competitions total before starting my family and having kids. While I still lift and train from time to time, my love for the sport has never died.

Cannabis helped me grow as an athlete. It gave me more focus on the movements while I was lifting and calmed my thoughts to allow my mind and muscle connection. The mind is such a powerful being of its own, it controls the entire body. I have always been a believer that most things in life are mind over matter. If your mind is strong, the body cannot fail you. In order to lift to my best ability, I had to get my mind right. The results were rewarding, I was proud of where I placed in each of my classes. It was an exhilarating time of life for me, to see my body change as I had envisioned it. I learned so much about myself as a person, as a woman. How much I could endure, how far I could push myself mentally and physically. Cannabis opened up my perspective in life, to do more, to be more. This was one of the most valuable lessons on my journey. Whether you are a professional or a beginner, there are many benefits to marijuana. Cardio can get boring and redundant, we have all been there. Hopping on a treadmill for 40 minutes doesn’t always sound thrilling. Changing your mind with cannabis not only gets you there, it encourages you to stay there, in the moment, focused and determined to get it done.

“It is known that each muscle fiber has more than one connection to the network of synaptic cells that govern muscle contractions. The more frequently you are able to use a particular muscle fiber, the stronger the connections between that fiber and your brain become. You either use it and strengthen it, or lose it. THC has been shown in multiple studies to substantially affect the way our brain can focus on and respond to the environment. THC encourages a type of rapid readjustment of attention that can allow you to focus on one part of a movement fluidly into another, staying focused during repetitive exercise movements without losing focus.” -Samantha Thompson

3. Recovery

Muscle soreness is a real thing, and let’s be honest, sometimes it can feel like you have the flu if you push it real hard. I used to suffer from delayed onset muscle soreness and the muscle stiffness would last up to 4 days. It would discourage me for my next work out and my motivation was diminishing. Hot baths, increased water intake, stretching and massages just weren’t cutting it. At night, my legs would be so restless I wasn’t sleeping adequately and overall just felt like a mess. You don’t have to be a bodybuilder or even a competitor to experience this. Getting back into the gym can feel rough, and working out a body that isn’t used to it can feel rough. Cannabis can aid in any type of recovery from physical fitness. It relaxes your muscles in a way your mind can’t always achieve and therefore helps them properly heal. It promotes real sleep by settling your mind and body, allowing you to heal properly. If we do not allow ourselves to rest and heal, we put more stress on our immune and nervous systems, raising our cortisol levels which increases illness and injuries. This breaks our bodies down in a dangerous way. If we do not take care of ourselves, we aren’t any good to anyone.

“There is a ton of literature about the efficacy of cannabis’ analgesic properties, effectively reducing pain and inflammation. It also helps making delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) less miserable, helping you get back into the gym faster. Cannabis is also a natural vasodilator, enlarging your veins and causing more blood flow, which will help aid in muscle relaxation and faster recovery.” -Samantha Thompson

When we are giving our bodies everything it needs to work to its fullest potential, we feel our best. When we feel our best, we become better friends, employees, daughters, moms, wives, etc. This is the true definition of healthy balance.

Swade Lights up the Delmar Loop

Swade Cannabis Lights up the Delmar Loop

Swade Cannabis has opened its flagship dispensary in the eclectic Delmar Loop and is now celebrating the lighting of another (soon-to-be) iconic sign on the legendary city side of Delmar. Swade has had a supportive arm in Joe Edwards, whose creative vision, risktaking, and leadership have helped transform The Delmar Loop into one of the most vibrant restaurant, shopping, arts & entertainment districts in the United States. Joe owns the abandoned church that Swade calls home. “The cultural heart of St. Louis is the music industry and Delmar is one of the most iconic entertainment districts in the country, commented Kevin Riggs, President at Swade. “Everything we have done to make this dispensary inviting came from Joe Edwards’ visionary lead. We knew that we wanted to be in the center of the exhilarating music, art and cultural scene that The Delmar Loop provides and couldn’t be more appreciative of Joe’s support and guidance. We are simply here to compliment the area and bring as much to the neighborhood as they have already brought to us and know that this signage will be one more recognizable image on this already spectacular block.” Swade commissioned David Hutson with Neon Time LLC to design this masterpiece. “The new Delmar SWADE neon sign is a real one-of-kind,” says Hutson. “It is destined, I think, to become a neighborhood icon that brightly represents the top-notch operation that is SWADE and pays homage to the flavor of the streetscape in this vibrant district.”

Each Swade location holds a bit of history, and Swade Delmar is no exception. Cissell Mueller Construction, Inc (CMCI) worked as the General Contractor for both the building remodel and the tenant finish. This structure is an old abandoned brick Church with years-old fire damage from sheltering the communities homeless, and water damage from rain after decades of being uninhabited. Principal architect Meg Holmes, of MIN+ Architecture and Aaron Bunse, excitedly jumped in after Swade leased the space, and together, they adapted the project into a destination retail experience. With all historic restorations, there are many State and Federal standards that a project must meet to ensure preservation of a building’s heritage. CMCI closely collaborated with Kiku Obata, the architects for the Joe Edwards and the church, and MIN+ Architecture, to highlight key historical features while evolving the function and design into a modern St. Louis destination once historical approval was received. The historical component of the design and construction of this project was what truly made it stand out from its sister Swade projects. Some of these features include: innovative brass lighting, waterjet cut brass signage, branded brass floor inlay and an artistic interpretation of an original terrazzo floor medallion as an overhead, illuminated, stained glass print.

Let’s Talk About Weed Baby

Guest Post

BY KASEY BOGGS

I spent the last week of summer in the most special place I’ve ever known. Laughing until my belly hurt with childhood friends, laying under the stars, reminiscing of all the moments we shared here. Watching the magic of the Lodge through the eyes of my children…. inherently instilled through the generations. Listening to the splashes in the water, their endless giggles. Skinny dipping until the wee hours of the morning. Going to sleep with wrinkled fingers and toes night after night. And as always, the river healed me. In more ways than I knew I needed.

Black River Lodge, my favorite person from there says, “A place to rest your weary soul”. A place so special, very few ever have words to describe it. Something so much more than a place. We wait a whole year until the next time we pack up the car, round the bend, cross the bridge and finally feel what we have all been missing the past 365 days. A place where our great grandfathers and grandmothers splashed in the river as kids, collected tadpoles, floated the rapids, sang songs around the campfire, slept under the stars and grew together, year after year. The Lodge is a place for firsts. Your first crush, your first sip of alcohol, your first kiss, your first time jumping in the water under the moonlight naked. The kind of experiences you will remember for a lifetime. And as time moves, some of those generations pass on without ever truly fading. Their spirits illuminate around you. They are in the smells from the campfire, the giggles of the children experiencing the magic for the first time, the sound of rapids rushing across the majestic rocks. It’s their spot you always remembering them sitting in at the dining hall for breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day. They have never truly left us. As all good things must come to an end, the next is born to start the tradition all over again.

While many of our stories have the same bones, we all wrote them differently throughout our time at the river and the years in between. Even though I have grown into adulthood, the lodge still makes me feel like a child again. A week to be born again, to live again in the memories that never end. Every year we are apart makes us closer, we yearn for the laughter, the love we share, the days where time has no meaning. Our children following in our footsteps, becoming our mini-me’s of the Lodge. Starting the beautiful cycle again just as our ancestors had envisioned. As a little girl I dreamed of my future, where I would go, and who I would be. I would build dams in the river to create little pools of water where I could build my tadpole families. I would name them and quickly narrate their life stories and who they were. I would picture growing up, getting married, and having a family of my own someday to share all of this with. To see it all again so innocently through their eyes. I would lay under a blanket of stars on the bridge late at night and watch shooting stars with my closest friends. We talked about where we would live, who we would marry, what our future children’s names would be.

I have always been an open person, and I am known best for wearing my heart on my sleeve. I don’t hide any part of myself from the people that love me. This year, at 33, there was a first for me. I was open about medicating with cannabis. I was confident in sharing that part of me with family and friends who asked me about it. Over the past year they have seen me on social media and the Swade site telling my story and putting myself out there in a way I have never done before, in a way they had never seen before. I expected it to come up but not as much as it did. At our last Swade event, “Marriage, Margaritas, and Mary Jane”, a person in the audience asked me a simple question. “How do you talk to your friends about cannabis?” My gut response was to lead by action, own your why, and stay confident in your beliefs. I felt like I had let this listener down. I was let down. Not because it was wrong or inaccurate, but because it was so surface. It felt empty. Later that night, I began to reminisce on how and when cannabis came up at Black River Lodge. It was never because I was talking about it. It was on their terms when they felt comfortable or curious. I’ve learned that actions really do speak louder than words. I love it when people challenge me, “Wait, you smoke weed? But you’re a mom!”, “You smoke pot and get all that done?”, “I don’t have any energy to work out, I can’t believe you get high and exercise.” Lead by example. This is the only true way to break stereotypes and eliminate people’s outdated assumptions.

At the beginning of the week, there were a lot of great questions that sparked awesome conversation. It was casual and it was really starting to get fun sharing this part of myself so openly. The week was amazing, every day filled with sunshine, the beautiful water of the Black River, good music, beer and endless fun. The days were for the kids, we splashed, collected rocks and crawdads, floated, enjoying every second of the day with zero worries. Time moves slow at the river, it’s most precious gift. After the bell rings for dinner, we gather to eat and head off for the tractor ride. I get to share with my kids the memory of a man that created this tradition, a very special soul, Casey Jones. Me, his namesake. Through the passed down stories you can see the spark in their eyes and feel that timeless nostalgia running through your veins. Every night there is an activity in the lodge that brings everyone together for more laughter and moments that will last a lifetime. We have talent show night, weenie roast night, bingo night, dance night, race night….and the list goes on. When they end, all the parents carry their very tired, nearly sleeping children off to bed and the evening becomes theirs. The night sky opens, and the lodge becomes different. We become kids again, exploring, flirting, singing, dancing, feeling the same way you used to feel playing truth or dare under the bridge. The magic comes rushing back, the ecstasy of your youth. After everyone went to sleep, my husband and I would walk through the lodge and down to the river at its quietest time. Keeping each other accountable to our pact of skinny dipping every night. We swam and kissed, shivering and giggling under the same stars I dreamed under as a little girl. I think that little girl would be proud of me. We walked back to the cabin, wrapped in towels to go to sleep, only to wake up and get to do it all over again.

Most of my friends thought we were crazy, staying up so late and having to get up the next day to hustle with the kids. There is no secret in my game, I am a canna-mom. Medicating with cannabis gives me the ability to fight stress, worries, migraines, body aches, and enables me to properly relax in my down time. Settling my mind and body to sleep was always a struggle for me, and now that my sleep is adequate, I feel like a new me. A better me. I chose to bring the disposable Sinse vapes. I kept it simple and brought 2 strains I know work best for me. My favorite day time pen is the Sinse Blue Dream. It is a sativa which gave me a lot of energy during the day and a clear head to balance all of the festivities and hustle with the kids. I also used it before the evening’s event. After the kids went down for the night, I then loved the Sinse Cherry Pie vape. Being a hybrid, it was the perfect amount of relaxation but enhanced my desire to stay up and enjoy the evening. When traveling with kids and family, convenience is my top priority. This sparked a lot of peoples’ interests. For younger people, they loved the idea of no smoke. As for the older piers, they were intrigued. Growing up in the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s all they ever knew was smoking joints. It was thrilling to sit around the campfire and get asked questions from this generation. It brought out a different perspective and acceptance. And in the end, they educated me as well. Never did I picture this as a kid. This opportunity was meaningful and yet another memory that will stay with me.

Even though you have known all these people your whole life, you really haven’t learned everything there is. Life is ever changing, and we never stay the same. I was blessed to share new things about myself because it helped me grow personally. In exchange I helped others see things from a different perspective that broke the mold of what some would refer to as a “stoner” or “pothead”. The stigma is dying, folks. Buckle up and enjoy your ride.
